The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a male inmate attempted to hang himself in the jail Monday afternoon.
Sheriff’s Investigator Kevin Angell said the man’s cellmate pressed the emergency call button to talk to detention officers to report the incident.
When a female detention officer got to the man, he had no pulse, so she administered CPR and revived him prior to the arrival of emergency services, Angell said. The man, who is alive, was transported to the hospital for follow-up.
Angell said the man’s bed linens were used in the attempt, adding an internal investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances.
“Outstanding work by our jail staff to save this inmate’s life,” Angell said. “A female detention officer made the save.”
