UNG men climb to 2nd at Peach Belt Championship; Ananthasane in 2nd for women

ST. SIMONS ISLAND — The No. 7 University of North Georgia men's golf team climbed two spots to a tie for second at the Peach Belt Championships Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Maddie Ananthasane shot the low round of the day as the University of North Georgia women's golf team sits in fourth place after the second round.

The North Georgia men shot a 1-under 283 on the day to sit at 8-over for the event, tied with USC Aiken for second place. The Nighthawks and Pacers are two shots back of Columbus State for the team lead with Flagler falling to fourth and Georgia Southwestern down to fifth.

Individually, Stephen Kinsel shot a 3-under 68 on the second day of the event to climb up to a tie for second place at 3-under, one shot off the pace. Kinsel had four birdies in his first seven holes to set the tone for the round. Evan Thompson is six shots off the lead in a tie for eighth at 2-over after an even-par 71 Saturday.

North Georgia will play in the final groups Sunday morning, teeing off on the first tee as they look for the program's first conference team title.

For the women, Ananthasane shot an even-par 71 to pull to within a single shot of the individual lead as she looks to defend her championship from a year ago. The league's Player of the Year had three birdies on the day, including shooting 2-under on the back nine to finish the round at 5-over for the tournament.

Ellie Rippee also finds herself in the top 10 headed into the final round, sitting in sixth place at 12-over after a second round 76.

The Nighthawks are just eight shots back of Columbus State and Flagler who are tied for first at 58-over for the event. Lander is at 60-over in third place, while Young Harris is in fifth.

The final round is set for tomorrow morning with the women teeing off on the back nine.
