UNG women, men both 4th after 1st round of PBC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Maddie Ananthasane sits in a tie for second, two shots off the pace as the University of North Georgia women's golf team finds themselves in fourth place at the Peach Belt Conference Championships after Friday's opening round.

Ananthasane shot a 5-over 76 in the opening round in blustery conditions. With winds near 20 miles per hour, Ananthasane birdied a pair of holes and limited damage the rest of the way around to get into a tie for second.

Ellie Rippee sits in a five way tie for fourth place at 7-over, and Lainey Panter is in a five way tie for 10th at 10-over for the tournament.

Flagler leads the tournament as a team by a single shot over Columbus State and Lander at 33-over for the event. North Georgia shot 39-over in fourth place, while Young Harris is 15 shots back of the Nighthawks in fifth.

Meanwhile, seventh-ranked men's golf team also is in fourth place after Friday's opening round.

Stephen Kinsel was the low Nighthawk on the day and sits in a tie for fourth place after an even-par 71. Kinsel started with a pair of birdies in the first four holes before wrapping up his round with a birdie on 17. Evan Thompson is in a tie for 12th after an opening round score of 2-over 73.

Individually, Flagler's Mauro Baez shot the low round of the day at 4-under 67 to lead the tournament. The Saints also lead the tournament as a team after an opening round score of even-par 284. Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern sit in a tie for second five shots back with UNG in fourth. Lander is at 15-over in fifth place.

The second round is set for tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. off the first tee for UNG.
