OAKWOOD — Both the Johnson boys and West Hall boys soccer teams took big home wins on Wednesday in the first round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.
They were part of four Northeast Georgia area teams to move on to the second round, joining six girls teams that advanced on Tuesday.
The Region 8-5A champion Knights, ranked second in Class 5A, beat Chapel Hill 5-2 at The Dungeon. West Hall, the Region 7-3A champion and ranked third in Class 3A, routed Salem 10-0, paced by a hat trick from Kevin Zúñiga-Chávez, at West Hall Stadium.
The East Forsyth boys gave Region 7-3A two opening round wins beating Sandy Creek, 6-2, at home. The Cherokee Bluff boys, however, could not get past Region 5-3A champ GAC, falling 5-1 in Lilburn.
East Jackson shut out Sonoraville 3-0 at home to also advance in Class 3A.
In Class A Public, No. 10 Commerce was overwhelmed by seventh-ranked Drew Charter, 6-0, on the road in Atlanta.
Against Chapel Hill, Johnson (17-1) showed its offensive balance as four different players scored. Ramon Aguilar had a brace and Angel Sagrero, Jorge Sandoval, and Jalil Chavez all scored once for the Knights. Rudy Granados, Sagrero, Kevin Castillo and Sandoval each had one assist.
The Knights next will play host to Woodland-Stockbridge, a 3-2 winner over Whitewater, in the second round on Tuesday.
Class 3A will be busy in the next round. West Hall (15-3-1) will take on Savannah Arts on Tuesday at home. East Forsyth will travel to Tattnall County while East Jackson will head to Pike County.
