A teenage student at Habersham County High School was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon just north of Cornelia.
According to Habersham County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Kevin Angell, the teenager - later identified as Cornelia resident Miguel Martinez - apparently lost control of his vehicle while driving on J. Warren Road.
"The vehicle left the roadway and ultimately made contact with a tree," Angell said.
The Georgia State Patrol later offered more information regarding the nature of the collision, saying Martinez's 2000 Ford Ranger was traveling north on the roadway when Martinez lost control and briefly left the roadway onto the west shoulder.
"[The vehicle] traveled back onto J Warren Road and began to rotate clockwise and counterclockwise. [The vehicle] traveled off of J Warren Road and went airborne and struck a tree," explained Corporal L. Ray with State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa. [The vehicle] struck another tree and came to an uncontrolled final rest facing east on the east roadside of J Warren Road. [Martinez] was extricated and transported to Northeast Ga Medical Center with serious injuries."
Martinez was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol was investigating the accident.
