Gwinnett County Police arrested a Lilburn man just after midnight Tuesday after he allegedly fired gunshots toward officers during a standoff at an apartment complex in Norcross.
According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, Terrell Kenyatta Andrews, 33, of Lilburn, is charged with reckless conduct, aggravated assault, battery and false imprisonment for his alleged involvement in the incident.
The release states officers initially responded to a trouble unknown call at Gwinnett Pointe Apartments on Dunleaf Arc Way in Norcross. The caller told authorities they needed assistance but did not provide any additional information.
Officers knocked on the door of the residence but did not receive a response. Several minutes later, Gwinnett County 911 received another call from the original caller, but this time they only asked for police with no information about the situation.
Officers later received information about a man who was inside the home with a weapon. The Gwinnett County SWAT team was then activated.
The SWAT team evacuated the surrounding apartments and began working on a plan to rescue any hostages in the apartment. The SWAT team started making announcements, at which time Cary Nelson, 75, of Norcross, exited the apartment with Andrews.
Andrews then returned to the apartment. Nelson was unharmed and safely rescued by the SWAT team.
Nelson confirmed to authorities that Andrews had access to weapons in the apartment. Andrews later began firing rounds sporadically in the direction of officers.
The SWAT team eventually breached the apartment and arrested Andrews.
