FLOWERY BRANCH — The Gainesville volleyball team opened the season with a sweep of the day's action.
Gainesville began the tri-meet with a 2-0 (25-15, 25-20) over Collins Hill and followed with a 2-1 (25-23, 21-25, 15-13) thriller over host Flowery Branch.
The Red Elephants were led by Izzy Garrish with 12 assists, 12 digs, and 2 aces. Jay Maldonado added 7 kills, 17 digs, and 5 aces. Kerrigan Gruhn added 9 kills and 13 digs. Margaret Embry had 18 digs and 2 aces. Savannah Brock added 12 digs and 2 aces. Callie Patterson had 5 kills, 5 aces, and 5 blocks. Makenzy Butler added 2 kills and 2 digs. Avery Lindsey had 8 digs, 10 assists, and 3 aces.
GHS (2-0, 0-0) will next travel to Apalachee to compete in the Queens of the Court tournament on Saturday.CB vs Habersham
Bluff splits with Hab and Dacula
After losing in overtime to Habersham Central, 2-1, Cherokee Bluff rebounded with a big win over Duluth, 2-0, on Thursday at home.
Bluff started the match with the Raiders with an opening set win, 25-17, but Habersham tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win in the second. The Raiders completed the rally with a 15-8 win in the decisive third set.
Sage Sutulovich led the Bears with 8 kills, 5 aces, 1 block and 2 digs, and Emma Staples helped out with 6 kills, 3 aces and 3 digs.
In the second game against Duluth, the Bears took their frustrations out on the Wildcats, storming past them in two dominating sets, 25-11, 25-13, to win 2-0.
Grace Blythe Cornett (5 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks, 3 digs), Staples (4 kills, 3 aces, 1 block 4 digs) and Sutulovich (4 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks, 1 dig) paced the Bears in the blowout win over the Wildcats.
Chestatee opens season on a roll
The Chestatee volleyball team swept North Hall and Fannin County on Thursday to complete the week's action 4-0.
It was the first time ever the War Eagles beat the Trojans, but it was not easy. Chestatee held off the Trojans in the first set in a nailbiter, 26-24 to take the momentum into the second set. In that set, the War Eagles had no problems putting away North Hall, roaring to a 25-13 win to seal the win.
Freshman Valiree Schumus led Chestatee with 11 kills, while setters Abby Allgood and Emily Graham helped direct the stellar offensively play.
Hannah Farrar and Anna Grace Edmonds had three kills each, and Arianna Hernandez turned in 15 digs. As a team, the War Eagles had five aces.
Against Fannin County, Schumus led the team with eight kills, while Farrar had two. Sophomore Riley Black finished with four digs, while Libero added six.
Earlier in the week, Chestatee knocked off White County, 2-1, and West Hall, 2-0.
