Officer-involved shooting in Banks County during fatal shooting investigation

A person of interest was injured in an officer-involved shooting in Banks County Saturday following a car chase.

The person of interest, who was not named by the Banks County Sheriff's Office in a post to social media, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Saturday morning, sheriff's deputies began investigating an "intentional shooting" after finding Asa (Junior) Wood, 59, of Commerce, deceased from a gunshot wound. Wood was a postal worker and had been on his morning route when he was shot, the post said.

Deputies established a person of interest in the investigation, including a vehicle description, and attempted to pull over the vehicle on Highway 51 North at Bennett Road. The vehicle of interest gave chase, and after being disabled by a PIT maneuver from law enforcement, the person of interest exited the vehicle armed.

The social media post said the person fired at deputies, who returned fire and struck the person.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to aid in the investigation, standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting, the post said. Banks County Sheriff's Office is also working with the coroner's office and the U.S. Postal Inspectors on the case.
