Helicopter rescues woman from the bottom of Talullah Gorge

A woman had to be rescued from the bottom of Talullah Gorge after breaking her leg on Monday.

According to Chad Black, the Director-Fire Chief for Habersham County Emergency Services, the woman fell while hiking. She did not fall from any height, but fell at ground level, breaking her leg. When it was clear that she was unable to hike out of the gorge, a call was made to 911.

The report says that call was made around 11:38 a.m. to the Habersham County 911 Center. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, where they determined she had an obvious fracture that would need medical attention. Due to the heat and the location of the patient, it was decided that a helicopter was needed to get the woman out of the gorge.

Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Aviation responded to assist with the wilderness rescue. The emergency team put the woman in a rescue basket and lifted her up into the helicopter, which was then able to get her safely to a waiting ambulance.

It took several hours to coordinate the rescue efforts and get her to safety, but the patient was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
