Gwinnett County has named next superintendent

A new superintendent has been named over Gwinnett County School Systems. On Thursday, the Gwinnett County Board of Education named Dr. Calvin Watts as their nomination, and the vote was unanimous.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Watts is currently serving as superintendent of the Kent School District in Washington state. However, he previously served as assistant superintendent in Gwinnett County for 13 years.

In order to follow Georgia law, the school board has to wait fourteen days before taking a final vote and making an official job offer.

The current superintendent of the largest school district in the state is J. Alvin Wilbanks. He is stepping down at the end of the month after 25 years – the longest serving superintendent of a large school district in the United States.

Watts would take over the 13th-largest school district in the nation, with about 180,000 students.
