Authorities: Victims in Gainesville poultry plant nitrogen leak died of asphyxia

Authorities have determined asphyxia was the cause of death for the six people who died during the liquid nitrogen leak at Foundation Food Group in Gainesville in January.

According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the death certificates of the six people show that the asphyxia was due to liquid nitrogen exposure.

The six people who died as a result of the Jan. 28 incident were identified as the following:

  • Jose DeJesus Elias-Cabrera, 45, of Gainesville
  • Corey Alan Murphy, 35, of Clermont
  • Nelly Perez-Rafael, 28, of Gainesville
  • Saulo Suarez-Bernal, 41, of Dawsonville
  • Victor Vellez, 38, of Gainesville
  • Edgar Vera-Garcia, 28, of Gainesville

Five of the victims died at the workplace, while one died at the hospital.

The bodies of the victims were transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy following the incident.
