DAWSONVILLE — The Johnson and Dawson County tennis teams split a pair of matches on Monday.
The Dawson County boys took a 4-1 victory while the Johnson girls beat the Lady Tigers 3-2 in non-region action.
The boys match was a nail-biter as all three singles matches went three sets. The Tigers won both doubles matches as Ben Swafford and Conner Scroggins held off Levi McBride and Sebastian Perez 6-4, 6-4 in another close match at No. 1. In the No. 2 doubles, Zach Friday and Sam Hulsey beat John Vargas and Jesus Valles 6-2, 6-2 for the first two points.
At No. 1 singles, Dawson County’s Brendan Swafford beat Adrian Blankenship 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (11-9) in a thrilling back-and-forth match that was decided by just four points. At No. 2 singles, Dawson’s Lane Perry knocked off Allan Garcia 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Johnson’s lone win was by Leandro Cupps in a 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win over Chase Cofield at No. 3 singles.
In the girls match, the Lady Tigers swept the doubles with the Lady Knights sweeping the singles. But it came down to the No, 1 singles match where Johnson’s Olivia Carpenter rallied from a set down to beat Kayleigh Moon 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) for the team win.
In the other two singles, Johnson’s Zoey Blankenship beat Blake Smith 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Lucy Bagwell held off Wendy Castro 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3.
In the doubles, Dawson County’s No. 1 team of Kenzie Stover and Avery Yarbrough beat Sophie Chica and Melia Glover 6-3, 6-4 and at No. 2 Marley Gaddis and Emily Jordan beat Alejandra Gamez and Jadira Martinez 6-1, 6-0 for their two wins.
