Forsyth County: Construction worker rescued after being trapped in a trench

A construction worker who became trapped when a trench fell in on him, had to be rescued by the Forsyth County Fire Department on Tuesday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m. in the Habersham Gates subdivision off of Buford Hwy in Central Forsyth County, a private construction crew was working in the neighborhood when the trench collapsed, and a worker fell into the hole.

According to Forsyth County Fire Department Division Chief Jason Shivers, they were able to pull him out alive in a matter of minutes, but injured. “The good news is that the fire station is just yards away from the subdivision. The fire crews were able to get to him quickly and, no doubt, I believe it is their rapid response helped lead to a successful recovery.”

Fire crews were able to get him out safely without using full rescue equipment.

He was alert and conscious, according to Shivers, but he did suffer injuries. He was transported to North Fulton Hospital with injuries to his lower extremities.

As a workplace incident, OSHA was notified and the cause of the collapse will be investigated.
