Rabun County firefighter suffers medical emergency during fire

A Rabun County firefighter is in serious condition after suffering a medical emergency while fighting a fire Friday night.

"We got dispatched to a brush fire, a small brush fire, near Lake Rabun at about 7:35 p.m. on Burns Lane in Lakemont," said Rabun County Fire Assistant Chief Justin Upchurch. "As they were finishing things up, one of the firefighters suffered a medical emergency. He was cared for by his fellow firefighters until EMS arrived."

The identity of the injured firefighter has not been released.

"He is currently at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, they are taking care of him right now," Upchurch said. "I've got an official statement as far as his condition, but I would say it was serious to critical."

Upchurch also was appreciative of Habersham and Hall County authorities, who helped them get the firefighter from Rabun County to the hospital quickly and safely.

More details about the incident and the firefighter's condition will be released later.
