Owners of Nix Hardware and Furniture plan to close store

By Dean Dyer, WRWH

An iconic business on the square in Downtown Cleveland will soon close its doors as the two business owners have decided it's time for them to retire.

Bradley Greene and Charlie Thomas, the owners of Nix Hardware and Furniture, have made it public that it's time for them to do something else.

Greene has worked at the store for 46 years, while Thomas has spent 40 years at the business. Nix Hardware was established in 1945 by the late J.L. Nix; Greene and Thomas acquired the business in 2000.

Greene said it was a hard decision to make, but things have been changing in the business, and during the past few years it has been difficult to acquire merchandise.

"I'm really going to miss all the people that we have dealt with over the years, all the friends that we have that come by and see us check on us, all our loyal customers, I hate to see that change," said Greene.

Thomas said not opening up the store each morning will take some getting used to.

"I think it's going to be a big change for me after coming here for 40 years. It's kinda sad but in another way, I'm excited about the future, too," said Thomas.

While Nix Hardware has sold everything from pocket knives to chain saws to refrigerators to couches and everything in between, the store is more than just a place to shop. People like to come by to simply sit in the rocking chairs and talk about and solve all the local and world problems.

Both mean said they have plenty to keep them busy once the store closes. Greene is a member of the Cleveland City Council and Thomas serves on the White County Board of Education.

There's no firm closing date for the store right now, and there are no specific plans in place for the building.

Thomas said they would like to see something really good for the Downtown Square come in and occupy the building when the time is right.
