Police continue to seek man accused of abducting Clarkesville child

The man accused of kidnapping his biological child by force from a Clarkesville home over the weekend remains at large.

Charles Eric Chambers, 46, is facing charges from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after allegedly taking his 18-month-old son from a home on Railroad Avenue in Clarkesville early Saturday.

Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett said the GBI is assisting his office with the investigation and likely will take the charges related to the abduction of the toddler who was the subject of an early-morning Amber Alert but was recovered unharmed.

“It was not the suspect that returned the child,” Barrett said. “It was somebody other than the father that ended up returning the child back to the apartment.”

Barrett said the investigation is ongoing into that and other parts of the case.

The abduction followed some type of dispute at the Clarkesville residence.

“It was kind of a domestic altercation,” Barrett said. “It was the father of the child that actually took the child, but he had no parental right to the child. He had entered the apartment where the child was living and had actually assaulted and battered the mother of the child and took the child without her permission.”

The mother suffered what Barrett termed “superficial injuries”, adding she did not require hospitalization.

Asked whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident, Barrett said, “There are a lot of things we’ve got to figure out and there are still a number of people we have to speak to before I can say for sure, but the mother of the child alleged that he appeared to be intoxicated by some type of substance.”

Chambers is described as 5-foot-9, 210 pounds, possibly driving a red extended-cab 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck bearing Georgia license plate RDP 3863.

Anyone who sees Chambers should dial 9-1-1 immediately.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Habersham County Dispatch Center at (706) 778-3911 or send a message to the Clarkesville Police Department Facebook page.
