Jefferson woman identified as victim found at base of Cochran Falls

By B.J. Williams

Dawson County authorities have now released the name of the woman who died on a hiking trail a week ago.

The body of Rachel Marie Koning, 21, of Jefferson was found at the bottom of Cochran Falls around 7:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. The Dawson County coroner confirmed the woman's identity this week.

According to reports released by authorities last week, Koning had gone to find help for her boyfriend who had suffered injuries while the two were on a hike.

Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said the investigation into the death is ongoing.

"At this point we have no reason to suspect that this death was more than a tragic accident, however our investigation is not yet concluded," Johnson said in an email statement. "Our thoughts and prayers continue to be the family."

Funeral services for Koning, a 2018 graduate of Jackson County Comprehensive High School who attended the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, are scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church in Flowery Branch.
