Winder teen struck, killed while riding bicycle home from work

By AccessWDUN Staff

A rising senior at Winder-Barrow High School was killed Sunday night when a motorist struck the girl's bicycle on Highway 211 in Winder.

On a GoFundMe page set up for the family of Obianuju Osuegbu, friends said the girl was on her way home from work at Ingles Supermarket when the deadly collision occurred. Osuegbu was 17.

Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 32 in Athens were called to the scene of the accident just before 9 p.m. Sunday. The investigation so far shows Osuegbu was on her bicycle traveling eastbound on the road in the center of the travel lane; her bicycle did not have lights.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the girl was also traveling eastbound on Highway 211 and hit the bicycle from behind. The driver, identified as Chrissy Rawlins, 41, of Winder, was charged with DUI-drugs less safe, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Once the investigation is complete, the State Patrol will turn its findings over to the local district attorney to determine if additional charges are warranted.

Organizers of the fundraising effort for the girl's family said the money will be used for funeral and burial expenses.
