Brief standoff in Lula ends peacefully with suspect's surrender

After a brief standoff Wednesday, a Lula man was taken into custody in connection to an armed robbery on Independence Day.

Rodney Dean Hedden, 42, voluntarily came out of his Maiden Lane home just before 3 p.m. and was arrested without further incident by Hall County Sheriff's Office Investigators and Active Criminal Enforcement Unit (ACE) members.

Hedden allegedly used a handgun on Saturday to rob a man who was visiting a residence in the Lula area, making off with several hundred dollars in cash, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office. No one was injured in the incident, but Hedden and the victim reportedly knew each other prior to the robbery.

After learning Hedden was in his residence on Wednesday, investigators knocked on his door around 2:30 p.m., the statement said. Hedden would not answer, and the ACE Unit created a perimeter around the home.

20 minutes later, Hedden surrendered and was arrested. Deputies then located a handgun near Hedden and an open safe with several firearms inside, according to the statement.

Hedden remains in the Hall County Jail as of Thursday, charged with armed robbery and also being held on failure to appear and a probation violation. The robbery on Saturday remains under investigation.
