Braselton man jailed for sexual exploitation of a minor after inappropriate cell phone communication

By AccessWDUN Staff

Following a two-month undercover investigation, a Braselton man was arrested this week and charged with 10 felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derreck Booth said investigators with the Sex Offender Registration and Tracking (SORT) Unit received a tip about possible inappropriate activity being conducted by Steffan Matthew West, 20, a registered sex offender.

"According to the initial investigation, between April 30 and June 25, West used his phone on at least ten different occasions to have sexually explicit conversations with a person he believed to be a child under the age of 16," Booth said in an email statement.

After obtaining enough evidence for an arrest, deputies went to West's home in Braselton on Tuesday, July 7 and seized his cell phone and took him into custody.

Booth said West used social media, phone calls and text messages to communicate with the individual.

On Thursday afternoon West remained in the Hall County Jail with no bond.
