A Gainesville man remained in the Hall County Jail at last report in connection with a series of burglaries on Atlanta Highway.

Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derreck Booth said Roberto Chavez, 21, is being held on a $14,200 bond.

"On Friday morning, April 24, Hall County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Little Giant Grocery in the 1900 block of GA 13/Atlanta Highway to the report of a burglary," Booth said in an email statement. " According to preliminary details, someone broke into the store during the overnight hours and stole approximately $1,500 cash and $100 worth of cigarettes."

Later that same morning, deputies were called to the scene of a burglary and a report of a stolen vehicle in the 1700 block of Atlanta Highway, according to Booth.

"The Gainesville Police Department also responded to a burglary at a business on Atlanta Highway on April 24," Booth said. The investigation showed the vehicle stolen in the county - a 2005 Infiniti G35 - was used in the Gainesville burglary.

Booth said investigators received a tip the following day that Chavez and the stolen vehicle had been spotted at a motel on Merchants Way in Oakwood.

"Sheriff’s Deputies and officers from the Gainesville and Oakwood Police Departments responded. Chavez was arrested without incident and the car was recovered," Booth said.

Chavez has been charged with theft by receiving for possessing the stolen Infiniti.  After further investigation, he was charged with smash and grab burglary, second-degree criminal damage to property and possession of tools for commission of a crime in connection with the Little Giant Grocery burglary.

Both county burglaries remain under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.  The Gainesville Police Department is investigating the third burglary.
