Suspect charged with murder of woman found at fire scene near Alto

CLARKESVILLE – The man arrested Saturday night in connection with a Saturday-morning fire on Yonah Post Road in southern Habersham County now faces a murder charge.

Jeramy Ray Chastain, 30, was charged with murder Tuesday in the death of Alecia Grace Stover, 43, of Alto.

Stover, who was found dead outside a burning home at 691 Yonah Post Road just before 7 a.m. Saturday, died of blunt injuries to the head, according to Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire.

Chastain was arrested during a traffic stop in Clarkesville Saturday night and initially held on a criminal trespass charge, said Sheriff''s Lt. Matt Wurtz.

On Monday, investigators obtained a warrant for Chastain charging him with false statements and writings, according to online detention center records.

Chastain remains jailed at the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville.

The case remains under investigation by the Habersham County Sheriff's Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Memorial services for Stover will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home in Cleveland.
