By AccessWDUN Staff

An Arcade city councilman was killed early Wednesday morning in a traffic accident on the Jefferson Bypass (SR 11 Connector) at Galilee Church Road in Jackson County.

Troopers with the Athens post of the Georgia State Patrol were called to the scene of an accident involving a log truck and a pickup truck just after 4:45 a.m.

"The investigation shows that the log truck had turned right onto SR 11 from Galilee Church Road when a pickup truck traveling north in the right lane of SR 11 struck the rear of the log  truck," said SFC Timothy Meyer in an email statement. "The driver of the pickup truck was transported to Northeast GA Medical Center in Gainesville, but did not survive his injuries."

The victim was identified as Kurtis Shane Cox, 44, of Jefferson. In addition to being a city councilman for Arcade, Cox was a volunteer firefighter for the city. An obituary for Cox said he was the owner of Design Logistics. Funeral services for Cox are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 at Woodbine Cemetery.

The driver of the log truck suffered minor injuries, according to Meyer.

Meyer said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
