Gainesville approves national car dealership application and water rate plan

GAINESVILLE – The Gainesville City Council gave unanimous approval Tuesday evening to an annexation request, followed immediately by a rezoning request, paving the way for Hall County’s first CarMax Auto Superstore.

CarMax is the nation’s largest used car retailer, having more than 200 stores nationwide, and plans to build a nearly 7600-square feet dealership on 7.81-acres along Browns Bridge Road near its intersection with Cherry Hill Drive.

According to the applicant, CenterPoint Integrated Solutions, the property will accommodate up to 400 vehicles and have the technology to allow customers to shop for and purchase vehicles totally online.

“Exterior finishes of the building (will be) similar to many of the CarMax Stores you’ve seen,” Community and Economic Development Deputy Director Matt Tate told council members.

NEW WATER RATE PLAN APPROVED

As reported last week, a plan by the Gainesville Department of Water Resources to:

  • create a “Lifeline Rate” to provide low-cost basic water services for minimum use situations,

  • expand the existing “Help 2 Others” (H20) program helping families in need during water emergencies,

  • convert billing calculations from CCF (centum cubic feet) to gallons used,

  • begin a ten-year long 1.9% annual rate increase starting in 2022 to moderate irregular rate hikes

was approved unanimously by the Gainesville City Council Tuesday evening.
