Tennis: GHS sweeps, Branch opens with dominant wins

FLOWERY BRANCH — The Flowery Branch girls and boys tennis teams dominated Apalachee on opening day Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Falcons dropped just three games in taking a dominant 5-0 victory.

Alyssa McSpadden, Olivia Nance, and Sandra Hernandez picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins in the singles play. The doubles teams of Julianna Velaj and Polina Chernikova and Madison Sedwick and Faith Marx took straight-set wins as well.

On the boys side, the Falcons shutout the Wildcats, 5-0, in the opening-day win.

Will Hernandez, Jack Thomas and Gunnar Hetzel all won 6-0, 6-0 in singles action. Matthew Helms and Nate Shedd captured their doubles match, 6-1, 6-0, and Mason Freeman and Riley Poole won 6-1, 6-3. 


The Red Elephants swept the doubles and got a pair of singles wins over the Class 7A Raiders at Longwood Park.

Phillip Mady beat Jaco Goode 6-0, 6-2 at No, 2 and Truett Kenner knocked off Matthew Schwieg 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. Dylan Pineda lost 6-4, 6-2 to Noah Tesone at No. 1 singles.

In the doubles both Gainesville teams took 6-1, 6-0 wins. Caleb Anderson and Charlie Buns beat David Adle and Logan Hilton at No. 1 doubles and Samuel Holt and Andrew Elliott beat Jesse Wise and Drew Weyenberg at No. 2 doubles.


The Lady Red Elephants, with just two returning players from the 2019 team, dropped just one set in taking a win over the Lady Raiders, also at Longwood Park, in their season-opener.

Hannah Williams and Kate Abernathy won in straight sets while Emmaline Dye needed three sets to win at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Callie Patterson and Mia Lily at No. 1 and Page Thompson and Caroline Brown at No. 2 each got straight-set victories.
