Demorest wreck claims life of Athens woman

An Athens woman died and the driver of the SUV was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Ga. 365 in Demorest Tuesday afternoon.

Gemma Musngi, 74, of Athens died when the 1998 Toyota 4Runner driven by Felipe Reyes Musngi, 73, of Athens went out of control and left the roadway south of Double Bridge Road, said Sgt. Casey Coffee of Georgia State Patrol Post 7.

The Toyota was traveling south on Ga. 365 in the left travel lane when it traveled off the roadway and into the median with all four tires, Coffee said. The driver overcorrected the steering back to the right then the vehicle began to rotate clockwise before yawing across both southbound lanes of Ga. 365 and leaving the highway on the west shoulder.

The SUV first struck a guardrail face and then several roadside trees as it overturned, Coffee said. The vehicle came to final rest on its passenger side off the roadway facing west.

Gemma Musngi suffered fatal injuries in the crash, Coffee said. Felipe Musngi was injured and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

The wreck was reported to Habersham County E-9-1-1 at 3:40 p.m.

The Georgia State Patrol Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.
