Qualifying for Hoschton special election begins Wednesday

By AccessWDUN Staff

Candidates who want to run for open posts on the Hoschton City Council will be able to qualify for a special election next week.

An open city council post and the open mayor's post will be up for special election on March 24, 2020.

The vacancies were created by the resignations of former City Councilman Jim Cleveland and former Mayor Teresa Kenerly. Both resigned from council rather than face a recall election this month. The two had been under fire since last spring for racially-charged comments they made as the city was in the process of hiring a city administrator.

Qualifying for both open seats will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8 beginning at 9 a.m. through Friday, Jan. 10 at 4:30 p.m., according to information from the Jackson County Board of Elections.

The qualifying fee for the city council post is $18; the qualifying fee for the mayor's post is $27. Anyone interested in running for either office may pick up qualifying packets at Hoschton City Hall.

Winners of the special election will fill the unexpired terms of each office, which end December 2021.

Hoschton citizens who want to vote in the special election must be registered by Feb. 24, 2020.
