LEXINGTON — It was raining touchdowns in Lexington as Union County beat Putnam County in a shootout 74-57 Friday night at War Eagle Stadium.

Union County (5-0, 2-0) and Putnam County (1-4, 0-2) combined for 131 points in a game that finished just a little after 10:30 Friday night.

Union County, however, struggled early on as Putnam scored with 10:18 left in the first quarter.

Union answered back with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Pierson Allison to Kyle Morlock with 8:45 left in the first quarter but missed the extra point.

The two teams traded scores over the next four minutes, with Union going up 12-7 off on a 3rd-and-goal pass from Allison to Sawyer Drake with 6:16 to go in the opening quarter.

Then Putnam fired back a minute later, taking back the lead 14-12.

Allison, however, would connect with Morlock once again on a 76-yard strike to Morlock. The pass play put Union up, 19-14 with 3:58 on the first-quarter clock.

That score was the start of Union's separation.

The Panthers scored two more times before the first quarter horn and led 53-28 at halftime.

In the second half, Union led 60-35 by the end of the third quarter and 74-51 late in the fourth quarter.

Union County will play host to Elbert County on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
