Gainesville man charged with damaging new BMWs, shoplifting at Banks Crossing

Banks County deputies have charged a Gainesville man in connection with a pair of crimes at Banks Crossing businesses last week.

Stanley Paul Jones Jr., 24, is charged with possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, theft by shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and second-degree criminal damage to property after separate incidents at The Home Depot and Walmart on Aug. 20, jail records show.

A Banks County deputy and investigator responded to The Home Depot at Banks Crossing, where someone had damaged several new BMWs that were on a car hauler, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Carissa McFaddin.

“The investigator noticed several things broken off of the vehicles, including wheel well molding, grills, gas cap cover, windshield moldings, name plates and a broken windshield,” McFaddin said.

While on scene at The Home Depot scene, deputies were dispatched at 8:14 a.m. to a report of a man with a gun at Walmart on the other side of Interstate 85.

“The male was reported to be walking around with the gun in his hand, approaching civilians in vehicles,” McFaddin said.

When responding deputies arrived, Jones had placed the gun in his waistband.

Deputies removed the pistol and a black camera backpack from Jones, according to the incident report. The pistol was found to be a black and silver Daisy BB gun.

Jones’ backpack was confirmed to be stolen from Walmart, as well as all contents of the bag, including two RCA tablets, two white MTV T-shirts, a gold watch, and a pair of Wrangler pants, according to the report.

Total value of the items taken was about $250, the report states.

Damage to the new vehicles was estimated at more than $3,400, McFaddin said.
