Toccoa police awaiting identification of man found dead in woman’s home

The case of an unknown man found dead when a Toccoa woman returned home after a week away remains under investigation.

Toccoa police officers were dispatched to 43 Norman St., Toccoa, at about midnight on July 31 to investigate a possible deceased person inside the home.

“When officers were speaking with the homeowner, she advised officers that she had just returned home from a week stay at the hospital and when she attempted to enter her residence, the front door was blocked,” said Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize in written statement. “When she went to the back door, she found it open and was able to see an unknown male lying on the floor against the front door. She then left the apartment and called 9-1-1.”

Officers contacted the criminal investigations division, the Stephens County Coroner’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. GBI crime scene specialists processed the scene.

The unknown man was taken to the GBI State Crime Lab in Decatur for autopsy.

“Several interviews were conducted, and the case remains under investigation,” Mize said.

Notification of the man’s next of kin is pending positive identification.
