Lawrenceville PD working through problems after ransomware attack

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Lawrenceville Police Department has had to work without access to computer records this week following a ransom ware attack on the department's computer system.

Lt. Jake Parker told CBS 46 in Atlanta officials believe the department was a specific target of the hackers.

Parker told the television station officers started to notice problems last weekend and the intrusion was confirmed Monday. Email has remained offline all week, and officers have had to radio reports in rather than file them electronically from their patrol cars. Reports are being written by hand.

Parker said records are routinely backed up, but he was unsure when the last back-up occurred, so there's no way to know how may records have been lost.

The TV station said city officials right now are trying to determine if they'll pay the ransom demanded by the hackers or if they'll try to completely rebuild the computer system for the police department.
