South Carolina fisherman dies in Northeast Georgia lake

A South Carolina man died Sunday night after falling into Lake Richard B. Russell in Elbert County.

Elbert County 9-1-1 received a call from a fisherman in the area south of the Sanders Ferry Road (Ga. 368) bridge, according to Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.

Responders arrived on the scene and found a deceased male, identified as Paul Young of Anderson County, S.C., at the edge of the water at Pickens Point.

Elbert County and Iva first responders reported the victim possibly suffered a medical condition and fell into the water, according to Elbert County S.O. A second fisherman tried to help the victim back into the boat.

Young was pronounced dead at the scene by Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond at 7:26 p.m.

The Elbert County Dive Team, Elbert County Water Rescue, Elbert EMS, Elbert County S.O., Georgia Department of Natural Resources and South Carolina DNR assisted.

The victim was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur to allow medical examiners to determine the cause of death.

The investigation continues.
