Updated: Clemency denied for killer Scotty Morrow

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has denied clemency to Hall County murderer Scotty Morrow.

The AJC reported Wednesday, the board is the only state agency that can stop an execution, at this point. The US Court of Appeals and The US Supreme Court could step in.

Morrow is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Thursday night at the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in Jackson.

Morrow was convicted in 1999 for the 1994 murder of two women, his former girlfriend Barbara Ann Young and her friend Tonya Woods of Gainesville

During his trial, Morrow's attorney only offered that Morrow had a rough upbringing and called no witnesses.

If carried out, Morrow will be the 71st person put to death by the state since the US Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty and the first inmate put to death in Georgia in 2019.  He will be the 50th person whose execution is carried out by lethal injection.

Morrow, 52, is formerly of Statham.
