Banks County wreck seriously injures child, hurts 3 other people

An unnamed juvenile was seriously injured in a 7:30 a.m. wreck on Ga. 15/U.S. 441 at the intersection of Historic Homer Highway in Banks County Wednesday.

The wreck also injured a Commerce woman and two other juveniles, according to Sgt. C.E. Parker of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

A Toyota Corolla driven by 43-year-old Marcia Ann Batten of Commerce was attempting to turn left from the northbound lanes of Ga. 15 onto Historic Homer Highway, according to Parker.

“Ms. Batten failed to yield while turning left and entered the path of a Honda Pilot, driven by Chanda Leigh Cornwell, 38, of Carnesville that was traveling south on Ga. 15,” Parker said.

As a result of the collision, Batten and three juveniles in her vehicle were injured.

The driver of the Toyota, identified by GSP as Batten, “presented with serious injuries and she was transported by EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center,” said Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols. “In the same vehicle, there were an additional three juveniles. Two were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in stable condition. The third child, a young male, was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire/EMS personnel.”

One of the children taken to the hospital was listed in serious condition, according to Parker.

“This patient was listed in critical condition and transported by EMS to Piedmont/Athens Regional Medical Center,” Nichols said. “The male child was later transferred by helicopter to an Atlanta children’s hospital.”

Cornwell complained of minor injuries and refused transport by EMS.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.

Emergency personnel remained on scene until 10:16 a.m.
