GBI charges Cornelia man in Demorest stabbing

Demorest Police Chief Robin Krockum says there is no danger to the public after a stabbing at Demorest Apartments Monday night.

“The suspect is in custody and the victim is at Northeast Georgia Medical Center,” Krockum said, calling it an “isolated incident”.

Krockum said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

The GBI was requested to assist in investigating the incident at Demorest Court Apartments which was reported to Habersham County E-9-1-1 about 9 p.m. Monday.

“Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim of the stabbing, Miguel Axel Pascual, 18, of Mt. Airy had been taken to Habersham Medical Center for treatment of stab wounds,” according to Nelly Miles of the GBI.

Witnesses told investigating officers that Francisco Matias, 18, of Cornelia stabbed Pascual, then fled the scene, according to GBI. Matias later was arrested at Habersham Medical Center where he was being treated for injuries suffered while fleeing the scene.

Matias was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Pascual currently is undergoing treatment at Northeast Georgia Medical Center and is listed in stable condition, according to GBI.

The investigation is continuing and, once completed, will be provided to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
