Restaurant supply warehouse catches fire in South Forsyth County

By B.J. Williams

Forsyth County firefighters spent more than six hours at the scene of a warehouse fire on the south end of the county late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Division Chief Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department said his crews were called to Sofo Foods on Lakefield Drive in Suwanee around 10:30 p.m. They stayed on the scene until just after 5 a.m., clearing the building of smoke, removing burned product and checking for hot spots.

Shivers said while the restaurant supply business will have some downtime as a result of the fire, the company was fortunate because the automatic sprinkler system in the warehouse kept the flames in check.

"The material that ignited was fairly flammable product - things like pizza boxes and styrofoam containers - those kind of things are going to burn readily," Shivers said. "Well, within a few minutes of the fire being noticed, the automatic sprinkler system activated and kept the fire in check until the arrival of firefighters."

Shivers said the warehouse itself sustained some smoke and water damage, but the greatest loss for the business was in the products; he did not know a monetary value for the loss.

While the business was operating at the time of the fire, there were no injuries to employees.

"The business followed their safety procedures and everyone evacuated, and when we arrived, everyone was outside waiting on us," Shivers said.

At this point, the cause and the origin of the fire remain under investigation.
