Tennis: GHS sweeps Johnson, Branch swept by Marist

The Gainesville tennis teams swept Johnson in non-region action at Longwood Park while both Flowery Branch tennis teams were knocked off by Marist in Region 7-4A action in Atlanta.

 

MARIST BOYS 3,
FLOWERY BRANCH 2

Flowery Branch got wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles but Marist used a sweep in the doubles to pull out a tight Region 7-4A win in Atlanta.

Drayton Matus (6-0, 6-2) and Jack Thomas (6-1, 6-1) got easy win at the top of the singles but Caden Caldwell lost 6-1, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

The No, 1 doubles team of Gunnar Hetzel and Matthew Helms dropped 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles and the team of Mauricio Castro and Nate Shedd lost 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles..

 

MARIST GIRLS 4,
FLOWERY BRANCH 1

The Lady War Eagles swept the doubles and got a pair of singles wins to knock off the Lady Falcons Thursday in Region 7-4A action in Atlanta.

Olivia Nance got the lone win for Flowery Branch beating Catherine Doran 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Annabelle Thomas and Alyssa McSpadden both lost in the straight sets at the other two singles matchs.

The No. 1 doubles team of Julianna Velaj and Traci Timmons lost 6-2, 6-0 and the No. 2 doubles of Madison Sedwick and Kim Raddatz lost 6-4, 6-2.

 

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 4,
JOHNSON 1

The Lady Red Elephants took an impressive win over the rival Lady Knights at Longwood Park on Thursday.

Grace O’Keefe (6-2, 6-2) won at No. 2 and Avery Vlassis (6-4, 6-0) at No. 3 both got singles wins for Gainesville. 

The best match of the day was at No. 1 doubles where the Gainesville team of Callie Patterson and Grayson Wagner rallied from a set down to get a  4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory. Gainesville also got a win at No. 2 doubles with Savannah Brown and Hannah Wagner winning 6-1, 6-0.

Gainesville next will play at Lanier on Tuesday in the final Region 8-6A match of the season.

 

GAINESVILLE BOYS 5,
JOHNSON 0

Gainesville swept rival Johnson losing just one set in a showdown at Longwood Park Thursday.

Philip Mady won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Ben Burns rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, (11-9) win at No. 2 singles, and  Truett Keener took a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

In the doubles, Michael Head and Caleb Anderson won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and Andrew Elliott and Samuel Holt won 6-2, 7-5 at No.2.

The boys improved to 8-2 on the season  and next will play Lanier for the Region 8-6A title on Tuesday at Lanier.
