Early voting gets underway Monday, March 18 for yet another election for House District 28 in Banks, Habersham and Stephens counties.
The race between Republicans Dan Gasaway and Chris Erwin has been played out in the courts for nearly a year.
Gasaway, the incumbent, was defeated by Erwin in the primary on May 22, 2018. That election was tossed out when officials determined some Habersham County voters received incorrect ballots. The courts ordered a Dec. 4, 2018 special election - a race Erwin won by just two votes.
After a recount confirmed the narrow victory for Erwin, Gasaway returned to court, claiming voter irregularities in the special election. After hearing a week's worth of testimony, Senior Judge David Sweat ordered another special election for April 9, 2019. Erwin was ordered to vacate the HD 28 seat after the ruling on Feb. 8, 2019.
Three weeks of advance voting in the special election will run from March 18 to April 5. March 30 is the one Saturday voting day scheduled during the advance voting period.
