Man rescued from flooded roadway in Forsyth County

A man survived a high-water rescue effort in Forsyth County without injuries after going around barriers closing a roadway in the northwest part of the county.

Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said it happened Thursday afternoon on Nicholson Road where the Etowah River breached it's banks and flooded the roadway by several feet.

"If his truck had floated into the main body of the river, he would have been swept away long before anyone could've gotten here," Shivers said.

He said the area of the roadway where the incident occurred is only a few feet from the banks of the Etowah River and floods often during periods of heavy rain.

Shivers said driving through flooded roadways can be dangerous. "You don't know if the water has washed the road away," Shivers explained. "There could be pitfalls, debris beneath the surface of the water, or there could be holes in the road that could swallow your vehicle. Culverts could be missing. Any number of things could happen."

He said the best thing to do when the water level prevents you from seeing the pavement is to turn around and don't drown.
