No. 3 Softball splits Opening Day DH

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Kylee Smith earned her first win of the season as the No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team kicked off the 2019 season with a 3-1 win over West Alabama Friday afternoon. The Nighthawks fell in their second game of the day to Auburn-Montgomery, 9-0.

GAME 1
The Nighthawks bats were hot to start the season as Kaylyn Anthony singled to lead things off. After moving around the bases, Katie Collins drove the junior home with a two-out single to put UNG up, 1-0. Two batters later, Collins and Marley Stowers, who reached after being hit by a pitch, came home on a Lexi Duncan single that tripled the UNG lead.

West Alabama answered in the bottom of the second on a McKinley Parris home run that cut the lead to 3-1. UWA had other opportunities, but Smith shut the door every time, striking out eight along the way to earn the complete game win.

GAME 2
The Warhawks bats were the hot ones in the second game of the day, putting up a three-spot in the top half of the third inning that was highlighted by a Morgan Duschell double that scored two of the three runs.

AUM scored again in the fourth before scoring two in the fifth and three in the seventh on their way to the 9-0 win.

NOTES
- Collins went 3-for-6 in the two games combined to lead the Nighthawks at the plate Friday. Against West Alabama, Anthony was 2-for-4.

- North Georgia is now 1-1 on the season.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will take on three teams tomorrow in the second day of the Gulf Coast Invitational, starting with a 12:30 p.m. matchup with former PBC foe Montevallo.
