County leaders move towards new gun range for Forsyth County deputies

Forsyth County commissioners take another step towards using donated land to build a gun range for deputy training.

Sheriff Ron Freeman spoke to commissioners about the roughly 17 acres that sits adjacent to the county's old landfill on Old Federal Road. "It is an ideal location for us," Freeman said. "Advanced Disposal has graciously agreed to do the grading for us, which is probably a 6-figure savings to the citizens of Forsyth County. They've got to reclaim it anyway. So, they're going to try to do it to our specs."

District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills asked Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt to reassure nearby neighbors of the safety of this project and said, "It would probably be good if we could get our consultant just to put something in writing that there's no danger, you know, as far as our own methane or anything to do with our landfill in conjunction with the shooting range."

Commissioners voted to approve the cost of both level one and level two environmental testing for the site.
