*The dining hall on the Georgia FFA-FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Center campus in Covington has been named for state Sen. John Wilkinson (R-Toccoa).  Wilkinson has a background in agricultural education.  In the state Legislature, he serves as chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee.  He is also a former executive secretary for the Georgia FFA Association.

*The University of North Georgia is in the top 10 percent of schools producing students with bachelor's degrees in physics, according to the American Institute of Physics. The data is from the "Roster of Physics Departments with Enrollment and Degree Data."   

*The website devoted to Gwinnett County’s yearlong Bicentennial  Celebration won Best of Show out of 249 entries in a National Association of County Information Officers awards competition. Four other awards for Gwinnett County communications materials were also presented in Nashville on July 15.    A video entitled “Gwinnett County Overview” took top honors in its category and the Multicultural Festival graphics won Best in Class for Special Graphics. A photo of the Bicentennial Torch Run won a Meritorious Award In the photography category. Gwinnett’s Budget in Brief publication received a Meritorious Award.

*During the August 2 Forsyth County Board of Commissioners’ meeting, Risk and Safety Manager Charity Clark was recognized for being named the 2018 Georgia Public Risk Professional of the Year by the Georgia Public Risk Management Association.

*The animated adventure-comedy, “Sherlock Gnomes,” will be shown at the Braselton Town Green on Saturday, August 18 at dusk.  The movie is rated PG and runs 1.5 hours. This month’s movie is presented by the Primrose School of Braselton at no charge.  Patrons are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and enjoy the concessions at the park.  For additional information, visit www.braseltonevents.com.

*Straight Street is gearing up to launch a new year of its Backpack Love ministry, which works to relieve hunger in Hall County. To kick-off the new school year, the organization is hosting its 5K race and fun run Saturday, Aug. 18. *Resurfacing the 5.7 section of State Route 371 (SR 371) between SR 9 and SR 20 in Forsyth County is scheduled to begin tonight. This will mean single lane closures nightly between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
