Gainesville woman dies of injuries from Nov. 13 wreck near Toccoa

A Gainesville woman has died of injuries from a Nov. 13 wreck in Stephens County.

Monica Nichole Thomas, 38, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, the Georgia State Patrol has confirmed.

The wreck occurred at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the intersection of Ga. 365 southbound and Ga. 184 outside Toccoa and involved Thomas’ 2011 Kia Sorento and a 2012 Honda Pilot driven by Brandie Hicks Bramlett, 26, of Toccoa, according to GSP.

Thomas’ vehicle was northbound in the right lane of Ga. 365 south of Ga. 184, while Bramlett’s car was southbound in the left lane of Ga. 365, according to the report.

Thomas lost control on the wet roadway while negotiating a right curve, then she overcorrected, causing the vehicle to slide across the left lane and the median into the southbound lane. The driver’s side rear door and quarter panel of Thomas’ Kia struck Bramlett’s Honda in the front.

Thomas was wearing a seatbelt but was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. She was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and later succumbed to her injuries.

Thomas’ seatbelt was found to be extended and broke at the buckle, according to the GSP report.

Thomas had been cited by GSP following the wreck for driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane, driving under the influence and no insurance, the initial wreck report states.
