Oakwood police arrest suspect on rape, aggravated sodomy charges

By B.J. Williams

A man who met a woman at a party in Hall County last month has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting her.

Oakwood Police Department Sgt. Todd Templeton said the alleged incident happened on Oct. 6, 2018 at a local motel, but the suspect, identified as Daniel Espinoza of Flowery Branch, was not arrested until Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018.

"The victim in this case was at a local motel room with several other people. Each of the parties was consuming a good bit of alcohol," Templeton said. "During this time, the victim fell asleep in the room and when she later woke up she found the suspect was having sexual intercourse with her, which was an unwanted sexual interaction."

Templeton said while the victim was getting in touch with police, Espinoza fled the scene.

Templeton said the suspect and the victim had met each other the day of the party, but otherwise did not know each other.

Investigators were able to talk to everyone involved in the incident in the following days, according to Templeton, and that lead to arrest warrants for Espinoza. He was arrested at the Oakwood Police Department on charges of rape and aggravated sodomy.

Templeton said Espinoza remained in jail Monday afternoon with no bond.
