Driver flees scene after striking hydrant, car, tree and house

TOCCOA  A Toccoa man faces charges after leaving the scene of a wreck on Brookhaven Circle near Toccoa just after 3 a.m. Sunday.

A 2016 Toyota 4Runner was traveling east on Brookhaven Circle negotiating a right curve when it crossed over the centerline and the driver overcorrected, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

The vehicle then ran off the road to the right and struck a fire hydrant, according to GSP. After initial impact, the vehicle struck a parked, unoccupied 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass, while the 4Runner’s right side struck a tree. After striking the tree, the 4Runner rotated and the left side struck a house. The driver fled the scene.

Paul Ellisworth Austin, 25, of Toccoa faces charges of failure to maintain lane, driving while license suspended or revoked, hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to notify the owner upon striking a fixture, according to GSP.

Austin’s family took to social media Monday asking the public to help them locate him, since the family has been told he was injured in the wreck that was reported at 3:11 a.m. July 9 on Brookhaven Circle at Stonewood Forest.
