Benton will take the helm at Arrendale State Prison in Alto on July 1

ALTO — A familiar face will be returning to lead Lee Arrendale State Prison as warden, effective July 1.

Brooks L. Benton has been named by Georgia Department of Corrections Commission Gregory C. Dozier to the position. He will be transferring from Whitworth Women’s Facility in Hart County, where he has served as warden since 2013.

“Brooks has displayed an exceptional work ethic during his career with the Department,” Dozier said. “We look forward to the experience he will bring to his new role as Warden of Lee Arrendale State Prison.”

As warden at Lee Arrendale, Benton will oversee a staff of 345, and 1,703 special mission female offenders, according to GDC.

Benton began his career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1993 as a correctional officer at Hart Detention Center. In 1995, Benton was promoted to counselor at Whitworth Parole Revocation Center, then was promoted to senior counselor in 1997.

In 1998, Benton was promoted to assistant superintendent at Alcovy Diversion Center, and was transferred to I.W. Davis Probation Detention Center.

Benton’s time at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto began when he was named deputy warden of care and treatment in 2008. He then was promoted to deputy warden of security in 2012.

Benton holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of West Georgia, with a minor in sociology. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Professional Management Program (PMP), Warden’s Pre-Command, Corrections Leadership Institute (CLI) and Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment Academy. 

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
