UPDATE: Charges coming in case of capsized boat

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Officials say charges are pending in the case of a boat that capsized Saturday afternoon on Lake Lanier in Hall County.

Mark McKinnon with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said that a personal watercraft apparently ran into the boat, causing it to begin sinking. No name has been given of a suspect, but McKinnon confirmed there will be charges brought.

McKinnon also said there were no injuries in the incident.

Hall County Fire Captain Zachary Brackett said they were called to the scene at Sunset Cove just before 5:00, where they found the 20-foot boat partially submerged in the lake and taking on water.

"It was about half-full of water, but it was also tied off to the shore," Brackett said.

Brackett said early reports are that everyone on board the boat was able to get to safety.

"We had other information that came in from Hall County Dispatch indicating that bystanders in other vessels had picked up several occupants of this boat," Brackett said. "It appears the occupants had enough time to remove some items from the boat before they exited."

Hall County crews left the scene, turning the investigation over to the Georgia DNR.
