The Jackson County Historic Courthouse Restoration Committee, Welcome Center, and Historic Archives are planning a number of events this month and next to mark the founding of the county on February 11, 1796.
Members of the Restoration Committee will be making presentations (targeting 8th grade) to each school system on the history of Jackson County, entitled “From Indians to the Internet: Finding a Sense of Place in Jackson County, Georgia.” (Details are available from individual school systems.)
For the month of February and March, an exhibit covering the 221-year history of Jackson County will be on display in the Historic Courthouse. This was curated by Margaret Holifield (volunteer with Historic Archives).
On February 1, the Jackson County Historical Society published a transcription of the first Jackson County Superior Court Docket Book, 1796-1802, which includes color images of each original page and an every-name index. This book was compiled by Sharon C. Stanley (volunteer with Historic Archives) and is available at the Historic Courthouse in the Archives office for $20 a copy.
