White County approves replacement metal detector, begins process of courthouse revamp

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND — The White County Courthouse in Cleveland soon may take on a new appearance.

On Monday, the White County Commission approved the purchase of a new metal detector scanning unit at a cost of $3,118. The unit that had been in use for several years failed.

In addition to approving the metal detector purchase, commissioners also discussed remodeling the front of the courthouse to include enhanced security measures.

They also talked about possibly demolishing the old jail building, located adjacent to the rear of the courthouse on Brook Street, and building a two-story annex building.

“If we are seriously thinking about tearing the old jail down and building an annex on the back of the building, anything we look at on the outside of the existing building needs to be compatible with what we are thinking about in the future for the new building because it will be one building then,” said Commissioner Edwin Nix.

Commissioners asked County Manager Mike Melton to check with an architect and get some basic ideas for the work, which will be the first step in many that will lead to the construction.
