Officials with the University of Georgia said the state's flagship university accounts for nearly $100 million in annual economic impact in the Gainesville metro area.
Economic impact was just one of several areas UGA President Jere Morehead addressed in his annual state of the university speech Wednesday.
"I'm pleased to share that the latest report indicates that UGA's annual economic impact on Georgia is $5.25 billion," Morehead said.
In the Gainesville metro, $5.7 million comes from research and service, the remaining $94.2 million as a direct impact of alumni living in the region, according to a university news release.
Morehead also touted job creation, saying the university is more invested than ever before in Georgia's communities .
"Our Small Business Development Center, which boasts 17 offices across the state, assisted Georgia in creating more than 3,300 new jobs (last year)," Morehead said in the address.
One of the locations is located at 906 Interstate Ridge Drive off of West Ridge Road in Gainesville.
